SRAM “Full Mount” Hangerless Derailleur System

SRAM "Full Mount" Hangerless Derailleur System

With the launch of the SRAM Eagle Transmission in 2023, one of the biggest takeaways was the direct mount derailleur design, which eliminates the need for a derailleur hanger. Derailleur hangers have always been a pain, but with no alternatives it just become the norm that everyone was used to. That has all changed now with the SRAM full mount hangerless derailleur system.

In the following article we are going to do a quick overview of the SRAM T-Type Eagle Transmission and then cover the main features of the full mount hangerless derailleur system.

SRAM Eagle Transmission

Before we get into the full mount hangerless derailleur system, it is first important to understand SRAM Eagle Transmission. SRAM's new T-Type Eagle Transmission was launched in 2023 and is a whole new system that includes all parts of the drivetrain. Each part has been designed to work together, meaning the new system isn't compatible with current Eagle drivetrain parts (Except the AXS controller). The T-Type Eagle Transmission is available in four different levels: XX SL, XX, XO, and GX. All of these levels utilize the new full mount hangerless derailleur system.

Here is what SRAM has to say about Eagle Transmission:

"Eagle Transmission drops a seismic shift on what it means to shift a mountain bike. Built around the universal constant of the wheel axle itself, Eagle Transmission is a radically robust, fully integrated and interdependent wireless transmission that literally changes how we ride. It simplifies, strengthens and extends lifespan to new limits. It uses no derailleur hanger or adjustment screws and lets you shift flawlessly under maximum power. Welcome to the dream made real." - SRAM

With all four of these new series', the derailleur mounts directly to the bike’s frame at the rear wheel axle, using SRAM’s Hangerless Interface. This means that the rear wheel axle is used as the derailleur’s mounting point. With the axle being the centre point of the cassette, the derailleurs upper jockey wheel is in the same relative position to the cassette - no matter which gear is selected. This helps keep it in line with the wheel and maintains a consistent position with the cassette.

Inline Cage

"The Eagle Transmission derailleur houses its pulley wheels in what we call our Inline Cage. Oriented to keep the top pulley in perfect alignment with the cassette throughout the entire gear sweep, it also keeps the bottom pulley in an optimum angle with the front chainring. All for superior chain management and better longevity." - SRAM

Magic Wheel

"That oversized bottom pulley in the Inline Cage is called the Magic Wheel because its outer ring rotates independently from the inner spoked hub. Should a stick become lodged between pulley and cage, Magic Wheel takes over, and your chain can continue threading through the derailleur without a damaging jam or bind."  - SRAM

Frames with SRAM’s Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) have the Hangerless Interface, required to fit T-Type’s new design. This means that T-Type Eagle Transmission will only work on bikes that use SRAM’s Universal Derailleur Hanger. The hangerless interface has essentially replaced the UDH. SRAM has also simplified the derailleur by removing all adjustment screws, which makes setup a-lot easier. As a result there are no b-tension or limit screws to adjust.

This is what SRAM has to say about their hangerless derailleur system:

"Utilizing the widely adopted frame design required for the Universal Derailleur Hanger, the Hangerless Interface allows Eagle Transmission to work around the one universal constant – the center of the rear axle. This opens up the possibility for perfect shifting, eliminates unnecessary parts and allows all other features to work in perfect relationship to this constant." - SRAM

Key Features/Takeaways

1. No more derailleur hanger - mounts directly to the frame at the rear wheel axle

2. Easy install

3. Perfect alignment of the rear derailleur without any adjustments necessary

4. More stiffness and precision - the derailleur sits 8–10 mm further inwards, keeping the AXS battery nicely protected between the mounting brackets

5. No need for limit adjustments or b-tension

6. Excellent shifting performance under full load and a clean look

7. The derailleurs have user-replaceable components, such as the cage, skid plate, and outer parallelogram links

8. T-Type Eagle Transmission will only work on bikes that use SRAM’s Universal Derailleur Hanger
